Affiliate Marketing is a popular way for businesses to get quantifiable referals from other web sites. The affiliate can be rewarded on a per-click basis, per impression, per lead or most commonly as a percentage of any resulting sales. For the mechant it is a great way to receive customers without much initial outlay. For the affiliate it is an easy way to form a relationship with a merchant who fits the theme of their site. Usually the sign-up process is automated.

Most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing, from the merchant's viewpoint, is that with this pay for performance model, no payment is due to an affiliate until results are realized.

Some mechant sites run their affiliate programs in-house using off-the-shelf or custom software, whereas other e-commerce vendors use 3rd party services, commonly known as "affiliate networks".
